There are quite a few Small Dogs Good with Children.  Some of the less well-known small dog breeds can be a good choice if you are looking for a dog that will be good with your kids.  Here is a look at some breeds you may wish to consider.

Chinese Crested

The Chinese Crested is an elegant little dog that comes in two varieties.  They can be hairless with a crest of hair on the head, a tail plume, and socks; or they can be the powderpuff variety with fluffy soft coat all over their body.  The Crested is an alert, playful little dog and they enjoy being around children as long as the children are gentle with them.  The Chinese Crested can stand up to 13 inches tall at the shoulder.

English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Spaniel is an old breed that probably originated in the Far East and which was then brought to England.  They became very popular during the time of King Charles II. These dogs are playful, happy, and gentle. They are good-natured and well-behaved, as well as being very intelligent. They do well in a family and they get along well with children. They weigh up to 14 pounds.

Italian Greyhound

The Italian Greyhound is a smaller version of the Greyhound and Whippet.  They are a gentle, playful breed and they get along well with children.  They do need regular exercise and they enjoy playing. They are affectionate and gentle.  At home they are relaxed and peaceful. The Italian Greyhound can stand up to 15 inches tall at the shoulder.

Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier is an American breed that was created by crossing a number of other small Toy breeds.  They are part terrier but a little gentler and easier to live with than most terriers. The Toy Fox Terrier is an intelligent dog who is brave and able to take charge. They are very loyal to their owners, friendly, and outgoing. They get along very well with children, especially with kids who are a little older. The Toy Fox Terrier can stand up to 11 inches tall at the shoulder.

Boykin Spaniel

The Boykin Spaniel is a member of the Sporting group.  These small dogs have a coat that is a rich chocolate color.  They are quite energetic and they do require plenty of exercise.  However, they love children and other dogs.  They do well with a family that is active.  These dogs were bred to be hunting dogs but they make excellent companions.  They stand up to 18 inches tall at the shoulder.  They are a relatively new breed for the AKC, being recognized in 2009.  The breed originated in South Carolina and they are the state dog there.

There are lots of small breeds which can be good with children.  The breeds here can be good choices and they are not as well-known as some of the more popular breeds.  No matter which breed or dog you choose, be sure to teach your children how to behave around dogs.  Do not leave small children alone with a dog.  It’s always possible for an accident to occur and the child or the dog could be injured.
